Free Cultural Experiences at Kulturhuset in Stockholm

Situated in central Stockholm is Kulturhuset, literally, the Culture House.  Just outside one of Central Stations many exits, Kulturhuset is easy to find and well worth a visit.

As you enter the building from the main entrance, a beautiful miniature model of Stockholm in the future is set up. Not only is it fun to see what is planned, but it is a great way to get oriented in the city (despite seeing some buildings that don’t yet exist, the model gives you a general view of Stockholm).

Kulturhuset is a large building with five different floors of exhibitions, most of them completely free.  The exhibitions range from film showings, photography, literary readings, really anything that can be collected under the umbrella that is culture.  The building even houses Stockholms Stadsteater, which performs wonderful plays, although almost exclusively in Swedish.

Along with the cultural exhibitions are a couple of cafes and restaurants with wonderful views out over the city.  It’s easy to disappear in the building for an entire day wandering around the different floors of the building, stopping to read one of the free newspapers from all over the world, or just browsing through the Designtorget, a great design shop on the bottom floor.
